Seminar on Fair Trade for the public in Miskolc

Many people don’ t know that the average coffee, tea, rice cocoa or cotton based products, consumed in our country every day, go to the shopkeepers by polluting environment, child labor and exploitation of producers, who send them to the shops of developed countries with multiple extra profit.

The Fair Trade stimulates to introduce consumers to fair production conditions and prices, social  program activities from ecological economy, which helps the producers of developing countries.

So the movement contributes to develop the biological diversity,  human rights, global teaching and capacity building too.

Members of Social Association got to know the work and importance of Fair Trade movement for whom the experts of Green Connection Association held a seminar in the intimate club room of Pax Corporis Association on 13th November, 2012.

The aim of the event was to talk about these global problems in Miskolc. In the seminar it  turned out that many people already know fair trade products, mainly the teas, and some cosmetics. But everybody complained that these days they are not available in the city. To replace it, those who took part in the seminar, could taste 12 different teas and coffees, with the help of Green Connection Association.

Fair Trade and the Mobility Week in Miskolc

The 10 days long event of mobility week in Miskolc, coordinated by The Ecological Institute Foundation gave a good opportunity for many visitors to get to know the importance of Fair Trade as well as the Fair Trade products available in more and more places in Hungary:

First the journalists and guests of the green press breakfast (15th Sept., 2012.) could choose among the different kinds of teas and coffees from organic farming freshly brewed by the Green Connection Association. It completed the supply of fruits, vegetables and cold cuts which arrived fresh from the organic market of Miskolc.

Secondly, people who visited the mobility week programs organised in Győri kapu (a nice part of the city) could taste the Fair Trade teas and coffees. Here primarily mothers arrived with their children because of the campaign „Expedition in your household” of the network of Environmental Advice Offices. The consultants and visitors could discover eco-conscious solutions in the use of architecture, energy, waste, water, chemicals. The daylong tasting which was organised by Green Connection Association, propagating accessible Fair Trade products with conscious shopping, fit well in this topic.

But the highest number of participants was noted in the evening party followed by the event of the Car Free Day (22nd Sept., 2012.) – the Critical Mass. Two-thirds of the participants of this bike procession (about 500 person) visited „Two-wheeled tea-shop” where the members of the Green Connection Association offered the bikers Fair Trade teas and sandwiches. Nearly 1000 cups of tea and coffee were consumed on this occasion, because the exotic organic teas and coffees aroused the curiosity of almost everybody beside drinking. The visitors took a lot of leaflets till twilight, the offer was very tasty and they left only when the stock of tea and coffee totally ran out.

3rd partner meeting in Miskolc

At the 3rd project meeting in Miskolc, the partners looked closer into the crucial issues: how can Fair Trade be promoted even better by local authorities in order to effectively support the Millennium Development Goals? How can more Fair Trade products be made available to German, Polish, Czech and Hungarian consumers? These questions need expertise as provided by the German and Polish Fair Trade Association, but also good ideas: Hannover is working on a sweet Fair Trade liaison of Malawaian Macadamia nuts with cocoa beans from Columbia – for the delight of chocolate lovers as well as the hard working farmers and their families.

European Tour Of Fair Trade Stakeholders From Malawi

“How do you get those nuts out of their hard shell?” This was one of the more easy questions to Grey Moffat Phiri of the Macadamia Growers`Cooperative Ntchisi. In end of May, the Malawian farmer had set off together with four local government representatives of Blantyre for a European roundtrip, in order to discuss about the potential of Fair Trade products together with activists and consumers in the partner cities of the EU-project “Aware&Fair”.

And Hannover, Poznan, Litomerice  and Miskolc involved their Malawian guests in a variety of public activities – at a “festival of cultures”, in meetings with owners of organic and ethical enterprises, a fashion show and reading in the public library, knowledge quest in the botanical garden, street market with information stands – and took opportunity to jointly raise awareness about Malawi, the Millennium Development Goals and their support through Fair Trade.
